You never have to pay to file a VA claim. Your County Veterans Service Office will sit down with you and help you apply for compensation, pension, health care, education, and survivor benefits — at no cost. This is the first call most veterans should make.

Buying a Home as a Veteran
This is my world, and it's where I can help directly. The VA home loan is one of the strongest benefits you've earned — typically no down payment, no monthly mortgage insurance, and competitive rates. Florida Property Tax Breaks for Veterans (worth thousands)
Florida is one of the most veteran-friendly states in the country for property taxes. If you own a home here as your permanent residence, you may qualify for:
$5,000 exemption — for a service-connected disability rating of 10% or higher (does not have to be combat-related).
Full exemption ($0 ad valorem property tax) — for veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability. This one can save many thousands every year.
Age 65+ combat-related discount — a property-tax discount equal to your service-connected disability percentage.
Most of these carry over to a surviving spouse. You apply at your County Property Appraiser's office, and the deadline is generally March 1. Thinking about buying? Florida even offers a tentative eligibility form (DR-501V) so you can confirm your benefit before you purchase.

Florida & Federal Veteran Benefits
You've earned a long list of benefits — and many go unclaimed simply because no one tells veterans they exist. Here are the ones worth knowing, from a free national park pass to Florida license, plate, and park savings. (Verify current details with each agency; rules and fees change.)
Free National Park Pass (America the Beautiful)
Every honorably discharged veteran can get a free lifetime Veterans Pass — free entry to more than 2,000 national parks, forests, and federal recreation sites nationwide. No disability rating required. If you have a permanent VA disability rating, ask for the Access Pass instead — also free, and it adds a 50% discount on camping. Get either in person at a federal recreation site with your DD-214 or Veteran ID, or order online at store.usgs.gov (small processing fee).
Florida Driver License & ID Veteran Designation
Any honorably discharged veteran can add a "V" (Veteran) designation to a Florida driver license or ID — useful proof of status for merchant discounts. Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability qualify for a no-fee driver license or ID card. Details and forms at flhsmv.gov/military.
Disabled Veteran License Plate & Parking Permit
Veterans rated 100% service-connected disabled are eligible for a "DV" license plate at no charge. Florida also issues a permanent disabled-parking permit at no fee. Apply through your local tax collector or motor vehicle service center. Florida offers many other military and veteran specialty plates as well.
Florida State Parks
All honorably discharged veterans get a 25% discount on annual state park passes. Veterans with a service-connected disability receive a free lifetime military entrance pass — admitting up to eight people at most parks. Get it in person at any Florida state park with your ID, DD-214, and disability documentation. floridastateparks.org.
Hunting & Fishing Licenses
Florida-resident active and retired military can buy a Military Gold Sportsman's License for $20 (hunting plus fresh and saltwater fishing). Veterans who are 100% permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition qualify for a free five-year hunting and fishing license. Apply at gooutdoorsflorida.com.
Education & Employment
The GI Bill and Florida tuition-waiver programs help veterans and their dependents pay for school, and Florida gives veterans preference in state, county, and municipal government hiring. Start at floridavets.org.
Federal VA Benefits
Your federal benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs include disability compensation, pension, health care, GI Bill education, vocational rehabilitation, life insurance, the VA home loan guaranty, and burial benefits. Your County Veterans Service Office (above) can help you claim any of them at no cost. VA.gov · 1-800-698-2411.

Housing & Financial Assistance
If you or a veteran you know is facing housing instability or a tough stretch financially, there is local help — and no shame in using it. These organizations serve veterans across Manatee and Sarasota, including HUD-VASH housing vouchers and emergency assistance.

Common Questions from Suncoast Veterans
Do veterans get into national parks for free?
Yes. Since December 2022, every honorably discharged veteran qualifies for a free lifetime America the Beautiful Veterans Pass, good at more than 2,000 national parks and federal recreation sites. Disabled veterans can get the Access Pass, which also adds a 50% camping discount.
Do disabled veterans pay property tax in Florida?
Florida veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability are exempt from ad valorem property taxes on their homestead. Veterans with a service-connected rating of 10% or higher receive a $5,000 exemption, and combat-disabled veterans 65 and older can get an additional discount. Apply at your County Property Appraiser by March 1.
