Celebrating America's 250th: July 4th in Bradenton & on Anna Maria Island
This year's Fourth of July is unlike any in our lifetimes. On July 4, 2026, the United States turns 250 — the semiquincentennial — and our corner of the Gulf Coast is marking it in a big way. As a veteran, this one means a great deal to me, and I wanted to put together a simple local guide so you and your family can be part of it.
From the island's beloved water-fight parade to one of the largest celebrations in Bradenton's history, here's where the Suncoast is coming together to celebrate 250 years.
On Anna Maria Island: the Privateers' Parade
The island's signature Fourth of July tradition is the Anna Maria Island Privateers' Independence Day Parade — a free, famously soggy, all-in-good-fun event. It rolls from Coquina Beach up through Holmes Beach and finishes near Bayfront Park in the City of Anna Maria, with the parade stepping off around 10 a.m. Fair warning: this is a water-fight parade, so if you're near the floats, expect to get soaked — bring water guns and a good attitude. It's one of the largest parades you'll ever stand along, and it's pure island community.
One heads-up for planning: in recent years the island itself has stepped back from its own fireworks show to protect nesting sea turtles, so for the big aerial display, most folks head to the mainland (below). Always check the latest before you go.
In Bradenton & Palmetto: fireworks over the Manatee River
The headline show is on the water. Bradenton and Palmetto put on synchronized celebrations on both sides of the Green Bridge, ending in a fireworks finale over the Manatee River that you can watch from either shore. On the Bradenton side, the Riverwalk and Rossi Park celebration is being billed as one of the largest Independence Day events in the city's history in honor of the 250th — live music, food trucks, family activities, and a car show. Across the river, Palmetto's Riverside Park hosts its own festivities. Both are free and family-friendly. Parking fills early, so plan to arrive well before sunset.
A few more ways to celebrate
If baseball and fireworks are your idea of the perfect Fourth, the Bradenton Marauders typically hold their Independence Day celebration with a postgame fireworks show at LECOM Park (often on July 3 — check the schedule). And for a meaningful way to give back, the "Play for the USA" golf tournament on July 4 at Terra Ceia Bay Country Club in Palmetto benefits Tunnels to Towers, a foundation that supports veterans, first responders, and their families — a cause close to my heart.

At our own VFW Post 10141
As Commander of VFW Post 10141 in Palma Sola (5105 Manatee Ave W, Bradenton), I'd be remiss not to mention our own celebration. We'll hold a ceremony at noon, followed by a cookout — burgers, hot dogs, and a potluck — with live music by Terry Helm from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. It's exactly the kind of community, food, and gratitude this day is built on. What 250 years means to me
I don't take this milestone lightly. My generation watched this country face hard days and pull together anyway — and that's the part I carry with me. I served because I believe in this country, and I get to live and work in one of the most beautiful parts of it, helping families put down roots here on the Gulf Coast. Two hundred fifty years is worth celebrating, and I genuinely believe we live in the greatest country in the world. There's no better place to mark it than alongside neighbors, on the water, with the people who make this community what it is.
