Where Are Florida's Newcomers Coming From in 2026?
Short answer: People are still moving to Florida in large numbers. More than 200,000 people transferred an out-of-state driver's license to Florida in the first half of 2026 — the highest first-half total since 2023. Most came from New York, Georgia, New Jersey, California, and Texas.
If it feels like everyone's moving to Florida, the numbers back it up. New data reported by Florida Realtors in August 2026 shows the pace of people relocating to the state actually picked up in the first half of the year. Here's what the data says — and what it means if you're thinking about a move, in either direction.
How many people are moving to Florida in 2026?
More than 200,000 people transferred their driver's license from another state to Florida in the first six months of 2026. That's the highest first-half total since 2023, and it's higher than the same period in both 2024 and 2025. It's also well above pre-pandemic levels — Florida saw about 173,000 transfers in the first half of 2019.
Florida Realtors' chief economist noted that license-transfer data is useful because it's close to real-time — a faster read on migration than slower federal sources, even if it's not as comprehensive. It doesn't count people who moved without driving, international arrivals, or Floridians who left. But as a snapshot of momentum, the direction is clear: people keep coming.
Where are Florida's newcomers coming from?
New York sent the most new residents by a wide margin, with more than 23,000 license transfers. After New York, the top sending states were Georgia, New Jersey, California, and Texas. It's the familiar pattern of people leaving higher-cost, higher-tax states for Florida's weather, lifestyle, and tax picture — and it hasn't slowed down.
Which parts of Florida are drawing the most people?
Statewide, the largest destination counties were Miami-Dade and Palm Beach, each drawing more than 12,000 newcomers, with Hillsborough, Orange, Broward, and Lee counties each recording more than 10,000. Those are the big metro magnets.
The Gulf Coast — Manatee and Sarasota Counties, where I work — is part of the same broader draw: people wanting warm weather, water, and a slower pace than the big-city markets.
